In the novel Peeta falls for Katniss but Katniss might have feelings for Gale. When she's with Gale she can be herself and the memories she makes with him makes her the happiest. The downside is Gale wants to run away with her and have a family which makes Katniss have no interest in. Her family counts on her in order for them to survive.
Peeta has always been in love with Katniss but she can't think about Peeta romantically because their both competing against each other and in the end most likely to kill one of another. Peeta then later on confess his love for her on national television and what can she say..? Should she reject him and have both of their life on the line? Or accept it and deal with the consequences?
"But now Peeta has made me an object of love. Not just his. To hear him tell it I have many admirers. And if the audience really thinks we're in love…I remember how strongly they responded to his confession. Star-crossed lovers. Haymitch is right, they eat that stuff up in the Capitol" Ch. 10. Pg.33
ReplyDeleteI felt that Peetas decision was very wise. Now the the public knows of this love battle, they will want the two tributes to win, in order to see them fight to the death. This statement alone would have rallied up the crowd and interested the sponsors. I feel that Katniss should accept his love as a publicity, like many current Hollywood actors and actresses today, and eventually show her real self as the game nears it's end. The only questions left would be what if she really falls for him? or Will she be able to push past her conscience and deceive Peeta?
