Book Report "The Hunger Game" by Suzanne Collins

"The Hunger Game" by Suzanne Collins is such a intense book that one cannot take their eyes away from while reading. Each chapter gives readers suspense and is nearly impossible to put down. "The Hunger Game" takes place in the ruins of a place North America, now known as Panem. In this dystopia future, the Capitol opens the annual "Hunger Game" which forces every districts to send two children age twelve to eight teen. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her sister's place in the game to save her. The Capitol holds the annual "Hunger Game" in order to keep the districts in line and to remind populace that rebellion equals "death". The novel mainly deals about "political corruption" where the corrupted government rules the whole nation without mercy and keeps them in order.
"The Hunger Game" by Suzanne Collins is definitely a book to read. It is wonderfully written story under extreme suspense and an ending that will leave one restless without having the next series of "The Hunger Game".

Sacrifice

I believe that there is nothing else more worthy than sacrifice for others.

In the novel "Hunger Game", there are great examples of sacrifice. When Prim is picked as a tribute to participate in the "Hunger Game", Katniss volunteers herself to take her young sister's place in the game. Since Katniss loves her sister so much, she volunteers herself to take her sister's place in the game. Although, Katniss already knows that it is a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Game, she sacrifices herself to save her loving sister, Prim. I believe that there is nothing else more worthy than sacrifice for others because the most difficult thing to do is to love neighbors or others as youself.

When the game's end is near, Katniss and Peeta attempt to commit suicide to show the whole nation that people are more valuable and worthy than the Capitol's game pieces. Sacrifice makes a dynamic impact in the "Hunger Game" because it reminds that every single lives are valuable and not meaningless.

Who is stronger Katniss? or Cato?

What makes Katniss so powerful? and so brave?
I believe that it is Katniss' fierce determination toward to stay alive and to resist the power of the Captiol. Firstly, Katniss must stay alive and win the game in order to go back to her home and familiy. She also promised Prim that she would come back to her. Moreover, Katniss detests the idea of the "Hunger Game" which makes Katniss and other tributes no more than game pieces. Katniss and Peeta want to show the Capitol that they are not the Capitol's entertainment by attemptting to commit suicide which makes no winner in the "Hunger Game". Having these determinations, Katniss is much more powerful, stronger and brever than Cato, who just wants to win the game and have fame and be rich.

The Capitol (Power)

The Capitol, the powerful government that controls 13 districts
Why does it have so much "Power"?
The main reason why the Capitol is so powerful is because it holds the most of the nation Panem's wealth. Most districts are in great poverty and people of districts suffer from starvation. Also, the Hunger Game, which is designed to warn and prevent people of distrcicts against rebellion. In the "Hunger Game", each district is forced to send two tributes to the Capitol to participate in the "Hunger Game" and the picked tributes become the Capitol's game pieces and their entertainments. Since, there is only one winner in the game, tributes are forced to kill other tritubes in order to survive and win the game. These factors remind people of disctricts that distrricts are powerless in fron of the Capitol and plotting a rebellion is meaningless.

Emotions.

Since the day that Katniss volunteered herself at the reaping, during the games and even after the games, there must have been hundreds of emotions running through her body. As we know on the day of the reaping when she was center stage getting introduced, she was fighting back her tears of possibly both fear and sadness. Of course she couldn’t cry though because how would the new tribute of district 12 look if she was crying at the fact that she just got picked for the hunger games? From that small life changing moment, Katniss has had to hide or fake her emotions every single day.

I find that Katniss is very strong with the way she deals with and handles her emotions. If I was in her shoes, I would probably cry my eyes out as soon as I found out that I was going to the hunger games. Also the fact that all tribute are on television for every move they make in the games would really annoy me as well. I don’t think I could survive the games but if I did end up winning, I would definitely have changed a lot and probably lost my mind.

Intensions ?

What intensions does the Capitol have with putting on the hunger games?

I believe that the intensions from the capitol of the hunger games are to not only to provide excitement and entertainment for the districts but to show how much power they have and to even make rivalries between districts. Although I think these are the intensions of the Capitol, I don’t think that they actually happen, well at least not in the past hunger games. I think this because of the relationship between Katniss and Rue. Even though they were both from different districts, there was no hate between them and you could see that they both really cared for each other even though they just meet. This was demonstrated by the way they took care of each other and even the way Katniss still took care of Rue after she had passed. Also the intensions of the Capitol looking strong and having power over the games got taken away by Katniss and Peeta at the end of the games. At this part of the games both Katniss and Peeta were going to outsmart the games and leave the hunger games without a winner by committing suicide off of the poisonous berries.

Smart or Violent

Is the best way to win the hunger games to be a smart or violent tribute?

I believe that the best way to win the hunger games is the way Katniss and Peeta won them, to strategize and be smart. I think that if you try to get through the hunger games being really violent and constantly hunting for people, you will eventually end up having yourself hunted down. If I was in the games I would take Katniss and Peeta’s approach on the games. I would be patient and wait for others to come to me but not too patient to end up getting myself killed. I would teach myself to be strong and have self control so that I could survive with the supplies I have and also the little food that I’d be able to gather. Lastly, if I was in the games I would definitely have to make an alliance. I think that I’d get too lonely and also it’d be easier to defend myself if I had a partner there fighting with me.

The End Of It

"And right now, the most dangerous part of the Hunger Games is about to begin."

This one quote made me think a lot through it, it was near the end of the book. Didn't Katniss won the Games? What does she mean by it? The Games are beginning again? Questions that I want an answer too but I have to probably read the next book. The Hunger Games was one of the best books I probably read it had many quotes, skills and themes to it.

Strength And Skill

In the Hunger Games, each candidate has his or her own set of skills and strengths. Cato, who has a crazy temper and can snap someone's neck with his bare hands. Foxface, the craftiest girl in the whole game. Rue who can jump from tree to tree. Peeta is a master of camouflage. Katniss, who is amazing with a bow and arrow. She has a rebellious streak a mile wide, one that impresses the Gamemakers during training. Everyone has some kind of strength or skill all their own. Who's strong enough to make it? Skill, strength or not let's see.

Love Is A Battlefield

Katniss Everdeen : the girl who cannot love. Katniss spent her whole life just trying to survive and because of that she doesn't get attached to people. Gale a boy that she kinda sorta likes. Then there's Peeta who she's just pretending to be in love with.

Love is a battlefield but we also learn that in the Hunger Games romance can be a really great way to survive on the battlefield. By having a pretend affair on her co-tribute Peeta, she's then is able to score support and gifts from her sponsors.

Another version of a reality show?

Real Housewives, Mythbusters, The Bachelor, The Biggest Loser, Jersey Shore examples of reality tv shows. People of Panem, country of The Hunger Games, also watch lots of reality television, except there’s only one show they watch it’s called the Hunger Games. The show is about a group of teenagers who kill each other in a fight to the death.

The Hunger Games makes us think about all of the different versions of reality in this novel and the consequences. What’s real and what’s not real in the Hunger Games?

Journal Entry #6 of 6

Katniss and Peeta can't kill each other, so they make a plan of taking poisonous berries to have a double suicide. Although the announcer comes back on before they can kill themselves, and says that.
Katniss and Peeta keep up the star-crossed lovers routine for the post-games reunion and interview, knowing that this is the only way to keep from being punished by the Capitol for the rebellious trick with the poisonous berries. Eventually Katniss figures out that Peeta really is in love with her and he figures out that she wasn't ever in love with him. As the train pulls into District 12, they put on a happy face for the camera, take each other's hands and step onto the platform. The book ends shortly after.

Now we are pushed to the 3rd Part.Katniss goes hunting for Peeta and eventually finds him. He is wounded and camouflaged in the muddy bank of a stream. She heals him and realizes that by playing up the romance angle, they can get gifts from sponsors.

Eventually, Katniss and Peeta must face off with Cato, the only other surviving tribute, but before that they are all pursued by wild dogs which are actually genetically mutated killing machines. Finally, Katniss shoots Cato and he falls into the pack. They've won, right? Wrong. An announcer comes back on and says the rules have changed back: only one winner allowed. Sparking anger and controversy amongst the two.

Katniss teams up with Rue, a tiny girl from District 11 who she feels is like Prim. The two are able to take out the Career Tributes' food supply, which totally infuriates their leader, Cato. Also, Peeta doesn't appear to be teamed up with them anymore. People are also unaware if his location. Unfortunately, Rue is killed by one of the Career Tributes. Katniss honors her body by covering it in flowers.

After Rue's death, the announcer, wanting to bring back the romance story between Peeta and Katniss, changes the rules of the game: two people from a single district can now win. Before she can stop herself, Katniss calls out Peeta's name.

Finally the long expected games have arrived. All 24 of the tributes are transported to the arena to fight it out. Katniss is on her own at first, but then she discovers that Peeta has teamed up with the Career Tributes – the strong kids from the rich districts in Panem who actually want to go to the Hunger Games. They eventually corner her in a tree, but she drops a tracker jacker nest on them (that's like a genetically mutated killer wasp) and scores a bow and arrow in the process.

After the reaping (the the tribute selection process, Katniss and Peeta are taken away to the Capitol to prepare for the Games. We meet their support team, which is comprised of Haymitch (a former Hunger Games winner and also a drunk), Effie (their wrangler) and Cinna and Portia (their stylists).

During the opening ceremonies, Cinna and Portia dress Katniss and Peeta in flames and they draw much attention to themselves. During training, Katniss reveals her archery skills to the Gamemakers and scores an amazing 11 out of 12. Peeta gets a lower score and asks to be coached separately. Peeta also announces in an interview that he has a mega crush on Katniss. Katniss thinks this is a place to gain sponsors. Yet it benefits her too, so she plays along.

Chan's journal Entry #1 of 6

In the first third of the book, we are introduced to our protagonist, Katniss Everdeen. Though she's only a teenager, she's a tough hunter who puts food on her family's table. Her father is dead and she lives with her mother and sister Prim in District 12 in the country of Panem. She hunts with a guy named Gale who is cute and might even have a thing for her, but I think we'll find out soo Katniss is not very in touch with her mushy side.

Every year the Capitol of Panem hosts an event called the Hunger Games where two "tributes" – a boy and a girl – are picked from each of the twelve districts to be brought to an arena and fight to the death.Only one person can win. This is to remind the country not to rebel – and for entertainment, of course. This year, unfortunately, Katniss's little sister is selected for the Hunger Games, so Katniss volunteers to take her place. Also selected is Peeta Mellark, who I believe so far has a crush on Katniss.

Are the feelings real ?

During the whole hunger games Peeta and Katniss had been dragging out their love antic of being “star-crossed lovers” but as the novel comes to an end, I personally can’t tell if it’s still an antic or if there actually are feelings between them. I believe that throughout the games Peeta’s feelings, words and actions are all genuine towards Katniss. In a way Peeta is living his dream, being with Katniss all day and night except for the fact that they are both in a fight to the death. On the other hand during the games Katniss just played along with the whole antic to help her win the games. As their love story was very popular with the audience and even earned district 12 some wealthy sponsors. I believe Katniss had no real feelings for Peeta until she realized how much she needed him to survive the games. When the games are finally over I think this is when she really realized that she started to like him more than a friend and not only that but he provided a safe feeling with his presence. Although she is starting to fall for Peeta, she still is thinking about Gale. I believe that there was feelings between Katniss and Gale before the games started, although both of them didn’t want to admit it.

I wonder who Katniss will choose in the next book, Gale or Peeta ?

What kind of influence is Haymitch to the tributes ?

In district 12 their mentor for the hunger games is Haymitch Abernathy, as he had won the hunger games for district 12 in the past and is helping in supporting and managing the tributes. At the reaping for district 12 this year, as he was giving a congratulatory speech to Katniss, he was so drunk that he fell off the stage and knocked himself unconscious.

If i was one of the tributes for district 12 I would be very upset with the fact that our mentor that is suppose to be teaching us about how to win the games is always drunk. Also the fact that his first impression on the tributes was him knocking himself unconscious was kind of ridiculous.
Not only does Haymitch appear to be useless at the beginning of the novel but he also appears to be a bad influence. As later on in the novel, the night before the hunger games begin Peeta says "i don't want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I'm not." (page 141) I believe that reason Peeta had said this was from the way that he had seen Haymitch act. Haymitch going through the hunger games and winning them, was probably what lead him to his alcoholism.

Although that's only one way of looking at how Haymitch had acted at the reaping. In another way, could him being so drunk and knocking himself unconscious be a strategy of making district 12 look weak and have a bad trainer ?

The Reaping.

During the reaping, Primrose Everdeen gets chosen to be the girl tribute for district 12. Even though the odds are in her favour, as there are thousands of slips of paper and she only has one. Without even taking time to think Katniss Everdeen pushes her way through the crowd and volunteers herself in order to save her twelve year-old sister's life. Making her the new tribute of district 12.

I think that from this part at the beginning of the novel Katniss has shown her bravery and also by this act she has shown how important her little sister is to her. I believe that Katniss volunteering herself was a smart move because she would be more likely to survive the games than Prim. As Prim has never had the experience of hunting and using weapons like Katniss has. Since their father had past away in the mining accident, their mother hasn't been herself and has left Katniss to fend for the whole family. Making her gain knowledge on survival and also improving her hunting skills which would be very useful things to bring into the hunger games.

If the Hunger Games were going on in our community and the person that got picked to be the tribute was family member, would you take their place ?

Katniss and Peeta at the opening ceremony and the meanings of their relationship.

The scene when Katniss and Peeta showed up in front of the Capitol in the opening ceremony made most of people in the Capitol falling in love with them. But in fact, did Katniss and Peeta do that for any purpose?
In my opinion, I think the love from the crowd help Katniss and her partner a lot. First of all, the cheers gave her a hope rising up in her. There would be one sponsor take her on. Secondly, Katniss and Peeta became lover would show the other tributes that they should watch out for this couple, ally with them or kill them first. And lastly, it started a relationship between Katniss and Peeta. They might become lover for real. The story will be more interesting if this couple joined the games and they had to kill another for survival.

Love Triangle

In the novel Peeta falls for Katniss but Katniss might have feelings for Gale. When she's with Gale she can be herself and the memories she makes with him makes her the happiest. The downside is Gale wants to run away with her and have a family which makes Katniss have no interest in. Her family counts on her in order for them to survive.

Peeta has always been in love with Katniss but she can't think about Peeta romantically because their both competing against each other and in the end most likely to kill one of another. Peeta then later on confess his love for her on national television and what can she say..? Should she reject him and have both of their life on the line? Or accept it and deal with the consequences?

Peeta and Katniss

During the interview with Ceesar before the Hunger Game, Peeta confesses that his lover is Katniss. Peeta explains to Katniss that its is only part of "strategy". Do you really think Peeta's act was part of "show" and "stratedgy"? or Do you think Peeta really loves Katniss?

Katniss Everdeen

I think Katniss is a very independent character in this novel. She's strong, caring survivor in the Hunger Games. Katniss couldn't let her sister Prim be in the Hunger Games so she volunteered. She also takes over her dad's role in the family doing everything for her mom and sister. The one to hunt and feed them. During the games she then start to think about herself and her identity. What if she wins the Hunger Games she start to question herself, would her life change and what would then happen to her? In the novel she questions herself :

For the first time, I allow myself to truly think about the possibility that I might make it home. To fame. To wealth. To my own house in the Victor's Village. My mother and Prim would live there with me. No more fear of hunger. A new kind of freedom. But then…what? What would my life be like on a daily basis? Most of it has been consumed with the acquisition of food. Take that away and I'm not really sure who I am, what my identity is. The idea scares me some. (23.62)

I think this quote is very deep and meaningful because she starts to think about herself more beyond and not just the normal average Katniss anymore. My question is who do you think Katniss be if she doesn't have to protect her family and the people around her all the time?

Imagine you are in Hunger Game

Imagine you are in the Hunger Game with people that you know like Katniss and Peeta,
what would you do in that situation? Are you going to try to win the game by killing others?
or are you going to sacrifice you life to let others win the game?

Do you agree with how the author sees the world? In which ways?

Through out the book, Suzanne Collins has shown an "interesting" point of view of what she see's to be mankind future. Well at least in North America.

My perception of the book tells me that Suzanne Collins feels we will be in a dystopic society, where the people are suppressed by the government. As we have taken our rights of freedom for granted, and pushed the limits of war, our race will start from a fresh slate that has been corrupt from the start. As all of mankind desires power  overtime a corrupt leader will rise, maintaining order, sadly not in the sense we see today. She feels as the government would have strong military power, it would strike fear into the eyes of it's weak people. This fear would influence them to participate in sick and twisted activities (like that of the dark ages) and cause them to fight for the lands scarce resources.

I feel that this perception is similar to of life after nuclear fallout war. To me this idea is very plausible due to the fact that throughout the world military technology is increasing. Everyday we find new ways to kill our kind in the millions. If this power is to get into the wrong hands ( and it will) our world as we know it will change. The idea that man's intention is to have absolute control is incredible accurate. In desperate times no human would like to share his/her wealth, or make others stronger. This survival instinct will get us into a life like that of the hunger games. People will form small tribes, and history will start to evolve again as in a similar fashion as it did over the present 800 years.

Well everyone i hope that gave you a sense of what to right about. Remember these are just my opinions. Feel free to say otherwise. In fact if you disagree i encourage you to discuss it here.

Sincerely,
Chan

How is the character like anyone you know or even like you?

My friend Charlie reminds me of Peeta. He is aproximately 6 foot and has beach blond hair. He has broad shoulders and has a decent build. He also prefers to keep to himself, and is somewhat shy. He is also very caring, and would take a bullet for someone that he cared for.

Welcome to the Hunger Games.

Hello Vadim, Marie, Monica, Scott, Nghi and Mrs. Willaims.
